Florida's Innovative Use of Robot Rabbits to Combat Burmese Python Invasion in the Everglades
In an effort to control the invasive Burmese python population in Florida's Everglades, the South Florida Water Management District, in collaboration with the University of Florida, has introduced the use of robotic rabbit decoys. These AI-powered robots are designed to mimic real rabbits by producing heat signatures and scents that attract pythons. Equipped with cameras, the robots alert officials when a python is detected, allowing for timely removal by trained agents. This initiative complements the annual Florida Python Challenge, a 10-day event where hunters compete to capture the most pythons. The Burmese python, native to Southeast Asia, has become a dominant invasive species in the Everglades, significantly impacting native wildlife.
