Healthy Dietary Patterns Linked to Slower Biological Aging in German Study
A recent observational study conducted in Germany, involving approximately 7,500 adults, has found an association between adherence to healthy dietary patterns and slower biological aging. The research, published in Nature Communications, utilized three different epigenetic clocks to measure biological aging by analyzing DNA methylation patterns at about 850,000 sites in the DNA. Ten healthy dietary patterns, including Mediterranean, Nordic, DASH, and various plant-based diets, were examined. The study revealed that individuals whose eating habits most closely matched any of these healthy patterns exhibited signs of slower biological aging. While the effects were described as modest, they were consistent across all ten dietary patterns. The study emphasizes that there is no single 'best' diet, allowing for flexibility in food choices based on budget, culture, and taste. This research adds molecular-level evidence to existing knowledge linking healthy eating with improved health outcomes.
