Study Highlights Impact of Cyclone Definitions on Diarrheal Disease Risks in Asia
A recent study published in the journal npj Natural Hazards examines how different definitions of tropical cyclone exposure affect the association with diarrheal disease mortality and morbidity across various Asian regions. Researchers used harmonized data and standardized analytical methods to evaluate the impact of cyclones, which affect millions annually through destructive winds, floods, and heavy rains. These natural disasters can contaminate water sources and disrupt sanitation services, increasing the risk of diarrheal diseases, especially in areas with inadequate water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) services. The study analyzed data from ten Asian regions, using wind-based, rainfall-based, and combined wind-rainfall metrics to measure cyclone exposure. The findings suggest that locally contextualized definitions of cyclone exposure could improve health risk identification and WASH preparedness, supporting better public health responses.
