Iran, China, and Israeli Groups Utilize AI Agents for Social Media Influence Campaigns
U.S. officials and security researchers have identified novel uses of artificial intelligence by Iran, China, and groups in Israel to conduct sophisticated influence campaigns on social media platforms. These campaigns leverage Chinese 'open-source' AI models to create 'agents' – bots capable of operating software and completing tasks autonomously. These AI agents then establish networks of fake accounts on platforms like Instagram, Facebook, X, and TikTok, seeding them with false posts about politics and current events to sway public opinion. This marks one of the first instances where AI agents have managed every stage of influence campaigns, from account creation to message coordination, often with safeguards against manipulation disabled. While the campaigns were described as crude, their ability to operate with minimal human intervention and at an unprecedented scale has raised significant concerns among U.S. intelligence and major tech companies.
