Philadelphia Controller Identifies Potential Property Tax Fraud, Suggests $30 Million in Lost Revenue
Philadelphia's City Controller, Christy Brady, has released a report indicating that the city's recent property tax crackdown may have missed thousands of ineligible participants in the homestead exemption program. The report identifies approximately 58,000 properties that may not qualify for the tax break, significantly more than the 22,000 properties reviewed by the city's administration. The homestead exemption allows homeowners to deduct $100,000 from their property's assessed value, saving up to $1,400 annually. The city has already removed over 13,000 ineligible participants, recovering $30 million in back taxes.
