President Trump Authorizes Resumption of Direct U.S. Flights to Lebanon After 40-Year Ban
President Donald Trump has announced the resumption of direct flights from the United States to Lebanon, ending a 40-year hiatus. This decision follows a meeting with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, where both leaders presented a united front despite ongoing regional tensions involving Israel. The suspension of direct flights dates back to 1985, following the hijacking of TWA Flight 847, which resulted in the death of a U.S. Navy diver. The move to restore air links is seen as a significant gesture, indicating that the U.S. views Lebanon as stable enough to reconnect with its aviation network. However, the U.S. Department of State currently advises against travel to Lebanon, citing security concerns.
