Toronto Police Arrest Three Men in First Canadian SMS Blaster Scam, Disrupting 13 Million Connections
Toronto Police have arrested three men in connection with Canada's first-known 'SMS blaster' scam. The suspects, Dafeng Lin, Junmin Shi, and Weitong Hu, were charged with fraud and mischief. This scam involved a device that mimicked a cell tower, tricking nearby phones into connecting to it and sending fake messages from trusted sources to steal personal information. The scam, first detected in November 2025, disrupted over 13 million network connections and posed significant safety risks by potentially blocking emergency calls. This incident marks the first of its kind in Canada.
