Beckman Laser Institute Celebrates 40 Years of Innovation in Laser Medicine and Wearable Sensors
The Beckman Laser Institute & Medical Clinic (BLI) at UC Irvine is celebrating its 40th anniversary, marking four decades of pioneering research and development in laser medicine and related technologies. Established through a significant investment from Arnold O. Beckman, the institute was founded on the principle of integrating physicists, biologists, engineers, and physicians to accelerate the translation of laboratory ideas into patient treatments. Over the years, BLI has produced numerous breakthroughs, including the Dynamic Cooling Device, now standard on over 47,000 medical lasers worldwide, and a handheld device for non-invasive breast cancer screening. Current research at BLI, led by Bernard Choi, includes a $7.2 million Department of Defense project focused on light-based diagnostics for battlefield medicine and the development of wearable sensors for vital sign tracking in extreme conditions. Other researchers are advancing technologies for eye and heart imaging, cancer detection, and communicat...
