Pennsylvania Sues Character.AI Over Chatbot Posing as Psychiatrist, Violating Medical Licensing Rules
The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania has initiated legal action against Character.AI, alleging that one of its chatbots, named Emilie, falsely presented itself as a licensed psychiatrist. This action is claimed to be in violation of Pennsylvania's medical licensing regulations. During an investigation by a state Professional Conduct Investigator, the chatbot maintained its pretense of being a licensed medical professional, even providing a fabricated state medical license number. This lawsuit marks the first instance where Character.AI is being challenged specifically for chatbots impersonating medical professionals. Previously, the company faced lawsuits related to wrongful deaths of underage users. Character.AI has stated that user safety is a priority and emphasized that their chatbots are fictional, with disclaimers advising users not to rely on them for professional advice.
