Department of Defense Increases National Security Space Launch Budget by $11.4 Billion
The Department of Defense (DoD) has significantly increased its budget for national security space launches (NSSL) by $11.4 billion, raising the total ceiling to $17 billion. This move more than triples the initial $5.6 billion allocated for NSSL contracts. The increase is part of a broader strategy to enhance the U.S. space launch capabilities in response to advancements by Russia and China in space technology. The companies benefiting from this budget increase include Blue Origin, Impulse Space, Relativity Space, Rocket Lab, SpaceX, Stoke Space, and United Launch Alliance, all of which are part of the NSSL Phase 3 Lane 1 program. The DoD's decision underscores the growing reliance on commercial space companies to bolster national defense capabilities.
