Study Reveals Single Adults in Tennessee Need Nearly $90,000 Annually for Comfortable Living
A new SmartAsset study indicates that a single adult in Tennessee requires an annual pre-tax salary of $89,898 to live comfortably. This estimate places Tennessee 37th among U.S. states in terms of the income needed for financial comfort. Notably, Tennessee was one of only six states where the estimated income required for comfortable living decreased compared to the previous year, experiencing the largest year-over-year decline in the study at 1.7%. The study's methodology is based on the 50/30/20 budget rule, which allocates 50% of income to necessities such as housing and utilities, 30% to discretionary spending, and 20% to savings or retirement. In a separate SmartAsset study conducted earlier this year, Tennessee's middle-class household income range was estimated between $47,998 and $143,994, with a statewide median household income of $71,997.
