Czech Republic Firefighters Participate in Exchange Program Training in Owensboro, Kentucky
A delegation of a dozen firefighters from Olomouc, Czech Republic, Owensboro's sister city, is currently in Owensboro, Kentucky, for a week-long training program. This visit is part of an ongoing firefighter exchange program established in 2024. Owensboro crews previously trained in Olomouc two years prior, and a planning delegation from Olomouc visited last year to prepare for this return trip. The primary objective of the exchange is to facilitate the sharing of knowledge and compare fire protection systems between the two countries. Lenka Gräsleová, head of crisis management and civil protection for Olomouc, highlighted differences such as Czech crews using less water and a single-rope system for rescues, compared to Owensboro's two-rope system, and not pairing firefighters with police on active shooter calls, unlike in the U.S.
