Algerabrug Closure Prompts Major Detours and Extended Travel Times for Commuters
The Algerabrug, a crucial bridge connecting Krimpen aan den IJssel and Capelle aan den IJssel, will be closed for four weeks starting August 10, 2026, due to essential maintenance work. This closure affects all motor vehicles, including cars, trucks, and buses, necessitating a detour via Gouda. The detour is expected to significantly increase travel times, potentially exceeding an hour. The bridge, which sees daily use by approximately 47,000 vehicles and 7,600 cyclists and pedestrians, requires extensive repairs, including the replacement of wooden beams and steel girders, repainting, and resurfacing. To mitigate the impact, alternative transportation options such as additional bus stops and an expanded Waterbus schedule are being provided. A temporary bridge will allow cyclists and pedestrians to continue crossing the river.
