Sumter County High School Launches Agriculture and Cannery Center, Attracting Congressional Visit
Sumter County High School in Americus, Georgia, has launched a new agriculture and food production program, providing students with hands-on experience in livestock care and the canning process. This initiative, part of the Ignite College and Career Academy, recently drew a visit from U.S. Rep. Sanford Bishop. The program features cows and goats, which were donated by community members and are now housed on campus. Students are actively involved in caring for the goats and learning to prepare cows for livestock shows, with future plans to teach them about animal reproduction. In addition to livestock, the facility includes a cannery where students learn the process of steaming, cleaning, and blanching community-grown fruits and vegetables for preservation in jars and cans.
