Maine Fall Foliage Season Begins with Low Color Change
The Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry has released its second 2026 Fall Foliage Report, indicating that less than 10% of the state has experienced color change so far. Northern and western Maine are showing slightly more progress, with up to 30% color change in some areas. Leaf drop remains very low across the state. Typically, northern Maine reaches peak foliage between late September and early October, while the rest of the state, including coastal areas, is expected to peak by mid-to-late October. The report highlights the role of tree species like maples, birches, and aspens in creating the vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows that define Maine's fall season. The foliage change is progressing from north to south, offering a gradual transformation across the state.
