Iowa Advocate Urges Lawmakers for Continued Support for Ukraine Amid Refugee Concerns
Martha Hulshof, an advocate from Ireton, Iowa, has been actively involved in supporting Ukrainian refugees and lobbying for continued U.S. aid to Ukraine. Hulshof recently participated in the Ukraine Action Summit in Washington, D.C., where she met with lawmakers, including Senator Joni Ernst, to discuss the importance of maintaining sanctions on Russia and supporting the return of Ukrainian children taken during the war. Her advocacy is rooted in her efforts to help approximately 150 Ukrainians find sponsors in Iowa following the Russian invasion in February 2022. Hulshof's involvement is further motivated by her personal connections to Ukraine, where her sister works as a missionary. Despite the support, many Ukrainian refugees in Iowa face uncertainty as their humanitarian parole status expires, leaving them unable to work legally while awaiting extensions.
