Congressmen Torres and Latimer Criticize Conditions at Delaney Hall Detention Center
Congressmen Ritchie Torres and George Latimer conducted a Congressional oversight visit at the Delaney Hall Immigration Detention Center in Newark, New Jersey. Delaney Hall, the largest immigration detention facility on the East Coast, is privately owned and operated by the GEO Group and currently holds hundreds of detainees. During the visit, Rep. Torres expressed concerns about the facility, noting that the vast majority of detainees have no criminal history and should not be detained. He criticized the Trump administration for spending $1 billion on the facility, which he believes should not exist. Torres highlighted the lack of medical care, with only one doctor available for 893 detainees, and described the facility as part of a larger private-prison mass-deportation complex.
