Troy Community Successfully Fights Trinity Health's Birthing Center Closure Plan
Residents of Troy, New York, successfully united to prevent Trinity Health, a Michigan-based hospital system, from closing the Burdett Birth Center at Samaritan Hospital. Three years ago, Trinity Health announced plans to close the birthing center, citing financial losses, which would have forced families to travel up to 30 minutes to another Trinity hospital in Albany. This decision sparked widespread outrage and a bipartisan community campaign involving elected officials, patient advocates, mothers, midwives, doulas, and community leaders. The campaign highlighted the center's importance, its model for patient-focused care with lower C-section rates, and the potential negative impact on low-income families lacking transportation. Despite Trinity Health initially insisting on the closure and even suing the state, the sustained community pressure, state investigations, and securing of $5 million in state funding ultimately led Trinity Health to reverse its decision.
