UN Human Rights Council Probe Reveals Foreign Fighters and Weapon Networks Fueling Sudan Conflict
The UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) established a fact-finding mission in October 2023 to investigate alleged violations and gather evidence related to the conflict in Sudan. This independent mission has documented the recruitment, training, and deployment of foreign personnel to support the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), as well as the role of transnational networks in supplying weapons, ammunition, military technology, and logistical support. The investigation specifically identified the deployment of up to 2,000 former Colombian military personnel who directly operated combat drones, artillery, and other advanced weapons alongside RSF units. Witnesses also reported fighters from South Sudan, Chad, and Ethiopia serving mainly in frontline roles. Private companies, intermediaries, and recruiters operating from countries including Colombia used transit points in Chad, Libya, and Somalia to facilitate the movement of personnel and materiel to the RSF.
