PennDOT Plans Major Parkway East Closure for Bridge Replacement, Aims to Minimize Traffic Disruption
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is preparing for a significant closure of the Parkway East in Pittsburgh to facilitate the replacement of the Commercial Street Bridge. The closure, scheduled from July 10 to August 3, will affect a major traffic artery that accommodates approximately 100,000 drivers daily. PennDOT is actively working to minimize the impact on commuters by implementing strategic detours and encouraging teleworking and carpooling. The bridge replacement involves complex engineering tasks, including the use of 42 jacks to lift and slide the new bridge into place. PennDOT is also coordinating with Pittsburgh Regional Transit to establish park-and-ride locations to ease the transition for daily commuters.
