NASA's Artemis II Mission Returns After Record-Setting Lunar Voyage
The Artemis II mission has successfully returned to Earth after a 10-day journey that took astronauts farther from the planet than any previous human spaceflight. The mission, which launched on April 1, 2026, from Kennedy Space Center in Florida, involved NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch, along with Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen. The crew traveled a total of 694,481 miles, reaching a maximum distance of 252,756 miles from Earth. The mission included a lunar flyby, where the spacecraft came within 4,067 miles of the Moon's surface. The Orion spacecraft, carrying the crew, splashed down in the Pacific Ocean near San Diego on April 10, 2026. NASA has stated that the mission's data will inform future missions, including Artemis III, which is planned for the following year.
