Minnesota Attorney General Sues Texas Governor Over Extradition of ICE Agent Charged in Shooting
Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison has filed a lawsuit against Texas Governor Greg Abbott to compel the extradition of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent Christian Castro. Castro is charged in Minnesota with four counts of second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon and one count of falsely reporting a crime, stemming from a January 14 shooting incident in Minneapolis. Prosecutors allege Castro fired his weapon through a home's front door, wounding Julio Cesar Sosa-Celis, a Venezuelan immigrant, and then falsely claimed Sosa-Celis and another man attacked an ICE officer. Castro was arrested in Texas in May but has not been extradited. Ellison warned that under Texas law, Castro could be released from jail next week if not extradited, posing a potential flight risk, especially given reports of him discussing marriage and buying a house in Mexico from jail. Ellison asserts that Governor Abbott is legally obligated to grant the extradition request.
