Former Green Bay Mayor Jim Schmitt Announces Bid for 2027 Mayoral Election
Former Green Bay Mayor Jim Schmitt has announced his intention to run for mayor again in the April 2027 election. Schmitt, who served as mayor for 16 years from 2003 to 2019, made the announcement at CityDeck in downtown Green Bay. During his previous terms, Schmitt was credited with significant downtown development, including the CityDeck riverwalk, the Schreiber Foods corporate office, and the restoration of Hotel Northland. He chose not to seek re-election in 2019, stating at the time that he did not want to be 'mayor for life.' His campaign platform for 2027 focuses on addressing homelessness, improving city infrastructure, and strengthening the downtown area. Current Mayor Eric Genrich, who succeeded Schmitt, has not yet indicated whether he will seek a third term.
