Sherpa Guide Rescued After Week Missing on Mount Everest
A Sherpa guide named Dawa Sherpa was found alive on Mount Everest after being missing for a week. He was last seen on May 29 while descending the mountain, but did not reach the base camp, although his client did. Dawa was discovered by a cleaning crew on Thursday morning as he was crawling down the snowy slopes near the Khumbu Icefall, just above the base camp. The rescue was coordinated by Pemba Sherpa of 8K Expeditions. Dawa was quickly given food and water and was airlifted to a hospital. The delay in organizing a search team and an unsuccessful aerial search earlier in the week had complicated the rescue efforts. Dawa, 52, works for Himalayan Traverse, a small company based in Kathmandu, and was guiding a Polish climber. This incident occurred at the end of a busy climbing season on Everest, which saw over 1,000 climbers and guides scale the peak.
