New Hampshire PFAS Remediation Projects Face High Costs and Bureaucratic Hurdles
Local PFAS remediation projects in New Hampshire are encountering significant financial and procedural challenges. The Lochmere Village District in Tilton, for instance, received $1.425 million in state funds to install an ion-exchange resin water filter, successfully reducing PFAS to undetectable levels. However, the district anticipates needing to replace the resin every 18 months at a cost of $20,000 to $35,000. Other communities, such as Pembroke, Allenstown, and parts of Hooksett, have implemented water restrictions to manage contamination, with Pembroke considering a $10.4 million bond to connect to Concord's water system rather than installing filtration. This connection is contingent on approval from the Concord City Council. Meanwhile, the Epsom Village Water District is stalled due to a lack of quorum, preventing it from initiating remediation efforts. These projects highlight the ongoing struggle for municipalities to address PFAS contamination effectively and affordably.
