U.S. Lawmakers Challenge Air Force's Waste Disposal Plan on Guam
Four House Democrats, including Rep. Debbie Dingell, have filed an amicus brief urging the U.S. Supreme Court to uphold a ruling against the Air Force's plan to dispose of explosive waste at Andersen Air Force Base in Guam. The lawmakers argue that the Air Force failed to conduct an environmental impact study as required by the National Environmental Protection Act (NEPA). The proposed disposal site is located above Guam's primary drinking water source, raising concerns about environmental and public health impacts. The Air Force plans to detonate 35,000 lbs. of bombs and burn hazardous waste annually at Tarague Beach, a popular recreational area. The Supreme Court is set to hear the Air Force's appeal in October.
