Palestinian Rights Groups Challenge Australian Defense Minister Over Arms Exports to Israel
A coalition of Palestinian human rights organizations has initiated legal proceedings against Australian Defense Minister Richard Marles, seeking the release of documents related to Australia's arms exports to Israel. The Australian Centre for International Justice (ACIJ), representing the group, filed an application in the Federal Court to compel the Australian government to disclose these documents. This marks the second attempt by the group to access such information, following an earlier, discontinued effort in November 2023. The documents in question include export permits granted before 2023 that are still active, as well as permits for arms not directly supplied to Israel. The group aims to determine whether Minister Marles adequately assessed the risk that these arms could be used in human rights abuses during the Israel-Hamas conflict, which began after the October 7, 2023, attack by Hamas on Israel.
