Michigan Democrats Criticize GOP Over President Trump's Canada Trade War and Tariffs
Michigan Democrats are actively campaigning against the Republican Party's support for President Trump's tariffs, particularly those imposed on Canada. This comes after trade negotiations between the U.S. and Canada broke down, leading to the U.S. imposing 50% tariffs on approximately $20 billion worth of Canadian goods. Canada retaliated with its own tariffs ranging from 15% to 50%. President Trump has also threatened a 50% tariff on Canadian cars, trucks, automotive parts, and steel next year. Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed and other Democrats are linking these tariffs to increased costs of living for voters. A report by the National Taxpayers Union Foundation and Trade Partnership Worldwide indicates that Michigan households have paid an additional $5,619 in tariffs between January 2025 and June 2026, the highest per-household rate in the nation. An EPIC-MRA poll found that 48% of Michigan voters oppose tariffs, with 63% specifically opposing tariffs on manufacturing and auto parts from Canada.
