President Trump's Proposed Military Budget Could Add $7 Trillion to National Debt, Watchdog Warns
President Trump is proposing a significant increase in the U.S. military budget, which could add nearly $7 trillion to the national debt, according to the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget (CRFB). The proposal aims to boost defense spending to $1.5 trillion, marking the largest year-over-year increase in defense spending since World War II. This comes as the national debt has recently surpassed $39 trillion, raising concerns among financial experts and policymakers. The CRFB's analysis suggests that the proposed budget would increase defense discretionary spending by $5.8 trillion from fiscal year 2027 through 2036, with interest costs contributing to the total debt increase. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell has also expressed concerns about the sustainability of the national debt's growth trajectory.
