Scientists Discover Ancient Sea Worm with Unique Bio-Metal Jaws, Potentially Redefining Material Science
Researchers have discovered an ancient sea worm, Perinereis cultrifera, with jaws made from a unique combination of structural proteins and metal ions, termed 'bio-metals'. This discovery, published in Biophysics Reviews, highlights the worm's jaws as a test case for bio-metals, which exhibit high hardness, specific strain responses, and a unique internal structure. The study utilized nanoindentation techniques to map the hardness of the jaws, revealing concentrated metal ions at the tips, enhancing their durability. The findings suggest that these jaws behave similarly to metals, displaying phenomena like the Nix-Gao nanoindentation size effect, where smaller areas are harder to dent. This research could inspire new engineering materials based on the principles observed in these natural structures.
