New Interactive Map Launched to Track State Wildfire Legislation for Electric Utilities
The Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) has collaborated with the Smart Electric Power Alliance (SEPA) to launch a new interactive map designed to track state-by-state wildfire legislation relevant to electric utilities. This tool, known as the Wildfire Regulation and Policy Tracker (WRAPT), addresses the growing challenge faced by electric grids in surviving and avoiding igniting wildfires. Wildfire risks, once primarily a concern for Western states, are now becoming a national issue, forcing states into complex discussions about liability, planning, cost, and risk management for utilities. WRAPT aims to provide lawmakers and stakeholders with an accessible overview of how different states are tackling these problems, currently showcasing 44 legislative and regulatory actions across 18 states. PNNL and SEPA plan to continuously update the map as new actions are introduced.
