Astronomers Observe Dead Star's Material Recycling into Galaxy, Predicting Sun's Future
Astronomers have for the first time observed a dead star, specifically the Helix Nebula, being recycled back into the interstellar gas from which it originated. This observation, led by Yale University's Pieter van Dokkum, provides a complete picture of a star's life cycle. Stars, after millions or billions of years, eventually exhaust their fuel. Sun-like stars, at their end, transform into planetary nebulae, like the Helix Nebula located 650 light-years away in the constellation of Aquarius. The Helix Nebula's central star ran out of hydrogen for nuclear fusion, causing its core to contract and its outer layers to expand into a red giant before detaching to form the nebula. The inert core became a white dwarf. As the nebula expands, its material disperses into the interstellar medium (ISM), enriching gas clouds that will eventually form new stars.
