GLP-1 Drugs Show Potential to Extend Lifespan and Healthspan in Mice, Suggesting Broader Applications Beyond Weight Loss
A new study indicates that GLP-1 drugs, such as those found in Ozempic and Wegovy, may offer significant longevity benefits. Researchers compared mice treated with semaglutide (the active ingredient in these drugs) to a control group and observed improvements in blood markers, appearance, and behavior. Most notably, the mice receiving the drug lived approximately 100 days longer, representing a 12% increase in lifespan. This finding suggests that GLP-1s could influence various biological changes associated with aging, including chronic inflammation, DNA damage, cellular senescence, and mitochondrial dysfunction. The study also found that GLP-1-treated mice exhibited better muscle and cognitive function. While calorie restriction is known to extend life, the GLP-1 drugs demonstrated additional benefits, particularly in exploratory behavior, spatial memory, and blood sugar regulation, suggesting a biological pathway independent of calorie reduction. These results, if translatable to humans, could imply an ad...
