European Automakers Report Surge in BEV Sales Amid Gasoline Price Shock
Battery-electric vehicle (BEV) registrations in Europe have seen a significant increase, rising by 29.4% year-on-year in 15 key markets during the first quarter of 2026. This surge is largely attributed to fears surrounding gasoline price shocks following the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. March alone contributed over 240,000 registrations, marking a high point for BEV sales in Europe, with a market share of 21.2% of all new passenger vehicles sold. Germany, France, Spain, Italy, and Poland recorded BEV growth above 40%, with Germany posting a 42% year-on-year gain. The increase in BEV sales is also supported by various incentive schemes reinstated in January, such as Germany's incentive scheme and France's social leasing scheme.
