EU Naval Force Intercepts Russian Shadow Fleet Tanker in Mediterranean
On August 2, 2026, the Italian Navy led a joint European Union force in boarding a sanctioned Russian shadow fleet tanker, the Toa Payoh, in the Mediterranean Sea. This operation was part of Operation IRINI, an EU mission aimed at monitoring arms and oil trafficking in the region. The tanker, sailing under a Cameroonian flag, was intercepted in international waters west of Pantelleria. The Italian vessel Thaon di Revel, supported by a Greek naval vessel and Polish maritime patrol aircraft, conducted the boarding after the ship's captain initially refused to cooperate. The operation was carried out smoothly, and verification of the ship's documents is underway. Operation IRINI, launched in 2020, originally aimed to enforce the United Nations arms embargo on Libya but has since expanded to inspect Russian shadow fleet vessels.
