Gates Foundation Aims to Double Credential Attainment by 2045
The Gates Foundation has announced a new strategic goal to ensure that 10 million learners aged 18 to 34 earn 'credentials of value' by 2045, effectively doubling the current rate of growth. This initiative is part of a broader strategic plan unveiled by Allan Golston, president of the foundation's U.S. program. The foundation's focus will include redesigning introductory college courses to improve passage rates and enhancing credit-transfer programs. This shift is driven by a finite operational window, as the foundation plans to spend approximately $200 billion before closing permanently by December 31, 2045. Golston emphasized that the initiative aims to create a society where aspiration outweighs circumstance, providing greater opportunities for learners. Patrick Methvin, the current director of postsecondary success, will serve as interim president following Golston's departure at the end of August.
