Ohio Health Officials Declare Third Measles Outbreak of 2026 Amid Rising Cases
Ohio has declared its third measles outbreak of the year, with four confirmed cases reported in Ashtabula and Tuscarawas counties. The Ohio Department of Health, led by Director Bruce Vanderhoff, is working with local health departments to identify and notify individuals who may have been exposed. The outbreak highlights a concerning trend, as Ohio has seen an increase in measles cases over the past few years, with 15 cases reported so far in 2026. The measles virus is highly contagious and can spread through coughing and sneezing, remaining viable in the air for up to two hours. Symptoms include a rash, high fever, and respiratory issues, with severe complications possible, especially in young children and immunocompromised individuals. The MMR vaccine is highly effective in preventing measles, and health officials are urging vaccination to curb the spread.
