Dermatologist Highlights Link Between Psoriasis and Heart Health Risks
Dr. Saranya Wyles, a dermatologist at the Mayo Clinic, has emphasized the connection between certain skin conditions, particularly psoriasis, and serious health issues such as heart attacks and strokes. Psoriasis, an inflammatory skin condition, is now recognized by the American Heart Association as a risk-enhancing factor for cardiovascular diseases. This condition, which affects about 3% of the global population, is characterized by thick, scaly patches on the skin and is an autoimmune disorder. Dr. Wyles points out that psoriasis can lead to metabolic syndrome, increasing the risk of high blood pressure, high blood sugar, and abnormal cholesterol levels. These factors collectively heighten the likelihood of heart complications. The dermatologist is actively researching the correlations between skin health, heart activity, and age through the Skin Aging and Longevity Understanding Database (SALUD).
