U.S. Department of State Approves $5 Billion Military Sales to Qatar Amid Emergency Justification
The U.S. Department of State has sanctioned two significant foreign military sales to Qatar, amounting to over $5 billion. This decision, made under an emergency determination, allows Qatar to acquire PATRIOT Air and Missile Defence systems and Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System (APKWS) rounds. The PATRIOT package, valued at $4.01 billion, includes 200 PAC-2 Guidance Enhanced Missile-Tactical units and 300 PAC-3 Missile Segment Enhancement units, along with various support equipment and services. The APKWS deal, worth $992.4 million, encompasses 10,000 APKWS-II rounds and related equipment. The emergency justification bypassed the usual Congressional review, emphasizing the strategic importance of Qatar in regional stability and its interoperability with U.S. military forces.
