Alberta Faces Major Investment Decline Impacting Productivity
Alberta, a key energy-producing province in Canada, is experiencing a significant decline in investment growth, which is affecting its productivity and economic performance. According to a study by the Fraser Institute, the net stock of productivity-enhancing assets in Alberta, which includes infrastructure, machinery, and intellectual property, has decreased from 2018 to 2025. This decline follows a period of positive growth from 1990 to 2014, where Alberta saw a 4.4% annual growth rate. However, from 2018 to 2025, the growth rate turned negative at -1.05% annually. This downturn is part of a broader trend affecting other provinces like Saskatchewan and Newfoundland and Labrador, though Alberta has been hit the hardest. The decrease in investment growth is contributing to lower productivity and living standards in the province.
