Brittney Griner Files for Divorce from Cherelle Griner, Citing Irretrievable Breakdown
Brittney Griner, a prominent basketball player, has filed for divorce from her wife, Cherelle Griner, after eight years of marriage. The filing, submitted on Thursday, states that the marriage is 'irretrievably broken.' The couple has been separated since July 24. Brittney Griner is seeking joint legal and physical custody of their 2-year-old son, Bash, and an equitable division of marital assets. This marks Brittney's second divorce, as she was previously married to WNBA player Glory Johnson. Brittney and Cherelle met at Baylor University and married in 2018. Cherelle gained public attention in 2022 for her advocacy efforts when Brittney was detained in Russia on narcotics charges. Brittney was sentenced to nine years in prison but was released in December 2022 through a prisoner swap. The couple's separation comes after a period of public support and advocacy by Cherelle during Brittney's legal troubles abroad.
