Venezuelan Migrants in Miami Face Homelessness Due to Travel Document Issues
In Miami, Venezuelan migrants, including mothers and their children, are facing homelessness due to difficulties in obtaining necessary travel documents to return to Venezuela. The issue arose after their husbands were deported, leaving them unable to sustain themselves in the U.S. without their partners. The migrants attempted to self-deport but were unable to board flights at Miami International Airport due to the lack of a 'salvoconducto,' a safety pass required by airlines, which they could not obtain because Venezuelan consulates and embassies have been closed since 2019. As a result, these families have been forced to sleep at the airport, unable to afford accommodation or food. Efforts to seek assistance from U.S. Customs and Border Protection were unsuccessful, as the agency could not help without passports. A Miami-based nonprofit, Hermanos De La Calle, has stepped in to provide temporary relief by offering shelter and food.
