Nebraska Sees Sharp Decline in SNAP Participation Amid New Verification Measures
The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) reported a nearly 17% decline in the number of residents receiving public food aid through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) since last July. This drop, amounting to about 25,000 people, coincides with the implementation of stricter verification measures and eligibility changes following a 2025 tax and spending cuts package approved by Congress. Advocates for low-income families, such as Nebraska Appleseed, have expressed concern over the increased difficulty in accessing SNAP benefits, citing longer application processes and additional documentation requirements. The DHHS maintains that these measures are necessary to ensure compliance with federal guidelines and to minimize payment errors.
