University of Rhode Island Students, Faculty, and Staff Receive Free RIPTA Bus Rides Under New Agreement
The University of Rhode Island (URI) has entered into an agreement with the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA), allowing URI students, faculty, and staff to ride public buses for free using their school IDs. This new arrangement, announced last week, means URI will pay a flat fee of $135,000 to join RIPTA’s U-Pass program. The agreement, signed on September 18, is effective from October 1 through August 31, 2027. Previously, URI students received a half-price discount on RIPTA's monthly bus passes, a system that had been in place for at least two decades. The U-Pass program grants members of the URI community unlimited bus access statewide, including nights, weekends, and university holidays, eliminating the standard $2 fare per ride. More than half of URI students commute to campus, making public transportation a significant service for their daily needs.
