El Niño to Suppress 2026 Atlantic Hurricane Season, NOAA Reports
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has issued its forecast for the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season, predicting below-average activity. The season, which runs from June 1 to November 30, is expected to see 8 to 14 named storms, 3 to 6 hurricanes, and 1 to 3 major hurricanes (Category 3 or higher). This reduced activity is attributed to the strengthening of El Niño, a climatic event that typically suppresses hurricane formation in the Atlantic. However, forecasters note that warmer-than-average sea surface temperatures in the Atlantic could partially offset El Niño's effects. The Atlantic hurricane season typically averages 14 named storms, 7 hurricanes, and 3 major hurricanes.
