Walberg Human Trafficking Bill Co-Sponsored by Representative Lucy McBath Clears Congress
A bipartisan bill, H.R. 4307, known as the Enhancing Detection of Human Trafficking Act, has successfully cleared Congress. The legislation, co-sponsored by Republican Representative Tim Walberg of Michigan’s 5th Congressional District and Democratic Representative Lucy McBath of Georgia, passed the House unanimously on March 3 and the Senate by unanimous consent on September 30. The bill mandates that the U.S. Department of Labor provide training and continuing education to its employees whose work might expose them to signs of human trafficking. This training will cover current trafficking trends, methods for identifying potential victims and traffickers, and procedures for referring suspected cases to the U.S. Department of Justice and other relevant authorities. The legislation also requires collaboration with victim advocacy organizations and federal, state, and local officials.
