Freedom House Report Highlights Rising Transnational Repression by Authoritarian Regimes
A recent report by Freedom House has documented an increase in transnational repression by authoritarian regimes, with 126 cases recorded in 2025. This practice involves autocratic governments reaching beyond their borders to target dissidents through methods such as cross-border assassinations, abductions, and intimidation. The report identifies China, Russia, and Vietnam as the primary perpetrators, with new participants including Afghanistan, Benin, Georgia, Kenya, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe. The misuse of Interpol's 'Red Notices' by these regimes to target dissidents has also been highlighted. The report underscores the growing collaboration among dictatorships to suppress dissent globally.
