U.S. Coast Guard Responds to Fire on California Offshore Gas Platform Near Santa Barbara
The U.S. Coast Guard is managing a response to a fire on a non-operational offshore gas platform, known as Platform Habitat, located approximately 7.5 miles off the coast of California in the Santa Barbara Channel near Carpinteria. The platform, owned by DCOR, was undergoing decommissioning when the fire was discovered by the crew of 26 around 7:00 a.m. local time on May 11. Despite efforts, the crew was unable to extinguish the fire and called for emergency assistance. The U.S. Coast Guard evacuated the crew, with two individuals suffering minor injuries. Two fireboats were deployed to combat the blaze, and a 1,000-yard safety zone was established around the platform. The platform, built in 1981 and operational since 1983, primarily produces natural gas. The fire was reported to be extinguished by 11:40 a.m. local time, with no immediate reports of pollution.
