Governor Pritzker Celebrates Opening of Southern Illinois Multimodal Station, Highlighting Infrastructure Investment
Governor JB Pritzker, alongside the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) and local leaders, celebrated the grand opening of the Southern Illinois Multimodal Station (SIMMS) in Carbondale. This $26.2 million investment aims to connect various transportation modes, serving as a new gateway to Carbondale and the broader southern Illinois region. The station is expected to enhance mobility, improve quality of life, and support economic development and tourism. SIMMS consolidates Amtrak, Greyhound, FlixBus, JAX Mass Transit, and four other regional transit providers under one roof, serving 28 counties. The facility, built on the site of the former Amtrak station, includes ADA-compliant platforms, upgraded lighting, electronic message boards, canopies, and roof-mounted solar panels.
