Chemical Leak at West Virginia Plant Results in Two Fatalities and Hospitalizations
A chemical leak at the Catalyst Refiners plant in Institute, West Virginia, resulted in the deaths of two individuals and sent approximately 30 others to hospitals. The incident occurred during a shutdown process at the plant, which is involved in silver recovery. A chemical reaction involving nitric acid led to the release of toxic hydrogen sulfide gas. Emergency responders, including seven ambulance workers, were among those affected, experiencing respiratory symptoms such as cough and shortness of breath. A shelter-in-place order was issued for the surrounding area but was lifted after five hours. The plant's owner, Ames Goldsmith Corp., expressed condolences and is cooperating with investigations by local, state, and federal officials, including the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
